Metal sculptures, often displayed in urban or industrial settings, face significant exposure to airborne pollutants such as sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and particulate matter. These contaminants can accelerate corrosion, tarnishing, and surface degradation. However, the resistance of metal sculptures depends largely on the material used. Stainless steel, bronze, and corten steel are popular choices due to their inherent corrosion-resistant properties.

Stainless steel contains chromium, which forms a passive oxide layer to shield against pollutants. Bronze develops a protective patina over time, while corten steel creates a stable rust-like appearance that prevents further deterioration.
