Metal sculptures are a popular choice for outdoor art due to their durability and aesthetic appeal. However, in humid climates, concerns about fungal or biological growth on these sculptures often arise. Fortunately, metals like bronze, stainless steel, and corten steel naturally resist such growth due to their non-porous surfaces and chemical properties.

Bronze, for example, develops a protective patina over time that discourages mold and algae. Stainless steel contains chromium, which forms an oxide layer to prevent corrosion and biological adhesion. Corten steel, known for its weathered look, also resists moisture-related degradation.

To further enhance resistance, artists and collectors can apply protective coatings like wax or specialized sealants. Regular cleaning with mild detergents and soft brushes removes organic debris that might harbor spores. Proper placement—ensuring good airflow and sunlight—also minimizes damp conditions conducive to fungal growth.
