Porcelain sculptures are delicate artworks that require careful preservation to maintain their beauty and structural integrity over time. Among the most critical factors influencing their longevity are humidity and climate conditions.

High humidity levels can be particularly damaging to porcelain. Excess moisture in the air may lead to the growth of mold or mildew on the sculpture's surface, especially in intricate details where water can accumulate. Over time, this biological growth can cause discoloration and weaken the material. Additionally, prolonged exposure to moisture may result in the leaching of glazes or the development of micro-cracks in the ceramic body.

Conversely, extremely dry conditions can also pose risks. Low humidity may cause the porcelain to become brittle, increasing its susceptibility to cracking or chipping. Dramatic fluctuations between humid and dry environments are especially harmful, as the repeated expansion and contraction of the material can lead to structural stress.

Climate conditions such as temperature extremes, direct sunlight exposure, and air pollution further compound these effects. High temperatures can accelerate chemical reactions within the glaze, while UV radiation from sunlight may fade painted decorations. Airborne pollutants can react with the ceramic surface, causing gradual deterioration.

To ensure optimal preservation, experts recommend maintaining a stable environment with relative humidity between 40-60% and temperatures around 20°C (68°F). Proper display cases with climate control, UV-filtering glass, and regular cleaning with soft, dry tools can significantly extend the lifespan of porcelain sculptures. By understanding and mitigating these environmental factors, collectors and museums can preserve these fragile artworks for future generations to appreciate.
