What are the best methods for preventing warping in large, flat porcelain sculpture pieces?

Creating large, flat porcelain sculptures can be challenging due to the risk of warping during drying and firing. To achieve flawless results, follow these proven methods:

1. Slow and Even Drying: Cover the piece with plastic or a damp cloth to slow moisture evaporation, ensuring uniform drying and reducing stress cracks.

2. Reinforce with Slabs or Supports: Use internal supports like clay ribs or wire frames to maintain structural integrity. For very large pieces, consider dividing them into smaller sections.

3. Optimal Clay Selection: Choose a clay body with high grog or sand content to minimize shrinkage. Porcelain blends with added chamotte are ideal for flat forms.

4. Controlled Kiln Firing: Fire at a slower rate with a pre-heat (candling) stage to remove residual moisture. Place the sculpture on a kiln shelf with wadding or stilts to allow even heat circulation.

5. Avoid Thin Edges: Thicker edges dry more evenly, reducing warping. Bevel or round edges to distribute tension.

By combining these techniques, artists can significantly reduce warping and achieve stunning, distortion-free porcelain sculptures.
