First, selecting the right clay body is crucial. High-quality porcelain with balanced silica and alumina content resists thermal stress better. Many artists mix additives like grog (pre-fired clay) to enhance durability.

Controlled drying and firing processes are equally vital. Slow, even drying prevents moisture-related cracks, while gradual heating and cooling in the kiln minimize thermal shock. Some artists use multiple low-temperature bisque firings before the final high-temperature glaze firing.
